  1. Where is Shay DeGrandis work? You forgot to post photos of her work, I am sure that was a mistake, right?

  2. Wasn't this a co-exhibit of Dmitri Samorov's and Shay DeGrandis' art? I see Shay's dog... but no Shay!

  3. After reading these comments, I realize there are two pictures of a facade, one of a dog, and no pictures of a co-presenter's work.

I expect that of a market less evolved than Chicago's.

What happened to you guys? I used to love haunting this page. Sad.

  4. You neglect to feature the work or even pictures of the female artist, but make a pointed effort to feature her dog.... Hmmm, epic fail. You should be ashamed.

  5. As a former Chicagoan who lived around the corner from the Rainbo for 15 years, I got all warm and fuzzy by the images of my favorite old haunt. Then I got all stunned and dumbfounded by the glaring and ludicrous complete omission of the female co-exhibitors. Gender bias much? Really, it's pathetic.

For those of you who haven't seen Shay DeGrandis' paper cuts, they're exquisite. I'm sure when Mr. Germanos pulls his head out of his 1950s arse, he'll agree.

  6. Whether all written by the same person, allegations of gender bias have been made in the 5 comments posted above. Let's look at the numbers.

This blog, "Chicago Art World," is 6 months old. And 62 articles have been published within it. Of those 62 articles: 11 were historical in nature; 12 concerned group shows; 4 pertained to mixed-gender couples; and 35 were divided between men and women.

Considering the 35 articles which were divided between men and women: 15 went to men, and 20 went to women. Another way to express that gender ratio is: 42% male and 57% female. So, yes, it's possible to identify a bias--a Feminist bias.

Here's a list of the articles:

    (15) MALE -

2008: Knut Hybinette & Troy Richards @ Thomas Robertello
2008: Jason Hackenwerth @ NavtaSchulz Gallery
2014: Craig Yu @ Devening Projects
    2014: Jake Myers @ Tritriangle
    2014: Dmitry Samarov @ LivingRoom
2014: Ryan Peter Miller @ Chicago Artists Coalition
2008: Ryan Duggan @ People Projects

2014: Mike Rea @ Devening Projects
2014: Jeff Austin @ The Mission
    2014: Fujui Wang @ Antena
2014: Daniel Shea @ Andrew Rafacz
2014: Jose Lerma @ Kavi Gupta
2014: Dmitry Samarov @ Rainbo Club

    (20) FEMALE -

2008: Anne Wilson @ Rhona Hoffman
    2008: Jillian McDonald @ threewalls
2014: Nora Schultz @ Renaissance Society
2014: Carrie Schneider @ Monique Meloche
2014: Hope Esser & Daviel Shy @ The Hills
2014: Laura Letinsky @ Paris London Hong Kong
    2014: Victoria Fu @ Document
2014: Judy Ledgerwood @ Smart Museum
2013: Kristina Paabus @ The Mission
    2013: Ebony G. Patterson @ Monique Meloche

2014: Mandy Cano @ Cobalt Studio
2014: Marissa Lee Benedict @ Chicago Artists Coalition
2013: Dana DeGiulio @ The Suburban
2014: Clare Britt & CCSJ @ SideCar Gallery
    2014: Lucha Clara @ Defibrillator
2014: Meg Duguid @ Terrain Exhibitions
    2014: Autumn Elizabeth Clark @ Winkelman-Milling
    2014: Victoria Martinez @ Antena
2014: Jessica Taylor Caponigro @ Comfort Station

If the numbers aren't enough, and the core of the complaint stems from a slight of Shay DeGrandis in favor of her male co-exhibitor, then examine the preceding article: Jessica Taylor Caponigro had a male co-exhibitor (Justin Petertil) at Comfort Station. And he (Justin) was slighted in favor of Jessica.

More, this June of 2014 as well, "Chicago Art World" coverage was given to Meg Duguid, while her male co-exhibitor (Tom Denlinger) at Terrain Exhibitions was slighted.

I received not a single complaint about my Feminist bias, nor about my neglect of Justin Petertil and Tom Denlinger this month. And I suspect that's because gender equity is nothing but a fig leaf to cover the outrage (expressed in the 5 comments above) that I haven't done what others wished me to do, when they wanted me to do it. Too bad...

Write your own reviews. Take your own photos.

When did it become my job, as an artist, as a critic, as a historian, or whatever else you'd like to call me, to function as a publicist? Go to Carol Fox and Associates, and pay for that service. I've labored not for years but for decades without any compensation other than the free exercise of my conscience in these matters; I don't intend to sacrifice it now. It's not any other person's business to tell me what art or artist to enjoy and support.

Chicago's intellectual bullying is threatening to its culture--maybe more so than violence in its streets.

  7. There is no quota on specific "gender/culture" art reviews or photography. A blogger should be free to review or photograph whatever he/she wants. If one is not happy with the content then look somewhere else.
